Bradt Slow Somerset
Written over two years, the first edition of Somerset – one in a fantastic series of Slow guides by Bradt – has just been published. The guide takes readers around every nook and cranny of my home county, from apple-rich orchards and pretty hamstone villages to marshy wetlands and misty moorlands. I’d be more than happy to offer any advice and tips on Somerset, and even devise an itinerary!
Bradt Guide To Montenegro
I am the sole author of the Montenegro guide, now in its 6th edition and which I updated over the course of several trips in 2018 and 2019 (published October 2020). I first visited the country in 1997, before writing the original Rough Guide to Montenegro in 2009 – so when Bradt came calling, I jumped at the chance to reacquaint myself with this tiny Balkan country, dominated by a spectacular coastline and almost entirely mountainous interior.
The Rough Guide To Romania
My first Rough Guide commission back in 2000, I have co-authored every edition since, but updated the current edition (published 2019) by myself. As much as I love the bustle of Bucharest, nothing beats hiking the mountains of Transylvania, spotting birdlife in the Danube Delta or exploring Bucovina’s ancient monasteries. After all these years, Romania remains one of my favourite destinations.
The Rough Guide To Slovenia
I wrote the first edition of Slovenia in 2004 and have updated every edition since. The current, fifth edition, is due to be published in autumn 2020. An astonishingly varied country, Slovenia has everything: towering limestone mountains, alpine lakes and rivers, virgin forests, caves and coastline – though I'm rarely happier than when sipping a glass of wine overlooking the lush vineyards of Goriska Brda.
The Rough Guide To Wales
Co-author of the Wales guide since 2012, my patch includes southeast Wales, the Brecon Beacons and Powys, the Cambrian Coast and Snowdonia. Wales is always a joy to work on, though I particularly love exploring the Black Mountains, the Gower peninsula, and the Valleys of South Wales.
The Rough Guide To Scotland
I have worked on the last three editions of this guide, with the most recent update in 2019 when I covered Dumfries and Galloway, Ayrshire and Arran, Stirling and Loch Lomond, and Argyll – it’s all completely wonderful, but for me, few places anywhere in the world can rival Scotland’s spectacular west coast.
Rough Guide to Scottish Highlands and Islands
I updated four chapters of the latest edition (published 2020), most of which was researched travelling around the country in a campervan with my family. The highlight was undoubtedly the remote northwest coast, though after all these years, Islay remains my favourite island, and not just because of the whisky…
I am also a co-author on the Rough Guides to Ireland and Budapest, and have also contributed to guides on Britain, Europe, France and the Dordogne. I have also worked on the following guidebooks for Dorling Kindersley: DK Slovenia; DK Scotland; DK Britain; DK Ireland; DK Back Roads Ireland; DK London; as well as the following for Insight Guides: Romania; Hungary.
